DROWN by Melanie Whithaus

Only a baby
when birthed from an egg
in a nest perked over salty water.

She came from deep inside—
vomit.
I pushed her out of my throat,
unhatched and stillborn.

Come now, my child;
Let the blood soak
through her
shell.

Wake up—
suffocate—

die again.
